New Hampshire – Franconia 2009

Mittersill Ski Area

Based on the RCI timeshare calendar, Week 1 in ski country can be fantastic. Of course, weather plays a pivotal roll on the ski conditions. Generally, most school vacation families have gone home and the lift prices usually reflect a decrease.

This year, Week 1 began on Friday, January 2. We checked into our home resort of Mittersill Alpine Resort, in Franconia, New Hampshire, which we purchased in 2006. It is adjacent to Cannon Mountain Ski Area. The resort was originally build by Baron Hubert von Pantz from Austria. His castle, located in Mittersill, Austria, was occupied by the Nazis during World War II. He left Austria to build a large guest house in an area with similar seasonal conditions. Franconia offered such a location.

Ultimately, the property became a timeshare in 1986. The main building retains the charm of an Austrian chalet, which we thoroughly enjoy. The close proximately to Cannon Mountain makes it an ideal location for skiing virtually in “our backyard”. The ski conditions this week were acceptable but we have seen much better. Actually, we have seen much worse! None the less, a restful week at this resort, regardless of the weather, is always better than a week at work.

Austria – Mittersill

Schloss Mittersill

On Monday, September 22, 2008, we visited Schloss (Castle) Mittersill in the Pinzgau Region, which was the home of Baron Hubert von Pantz, who also built the Mittersill Alpine Resort in New Hampshire. We own a timeshare ski week at that resort. Unfortunately, the Schloss is not open for tours.
